How I Prepared for my Bone Broth Fast
I had been dealing with digestive issues and recurring yeast infections for a few months before I learned more in depth about bone broth. I had made it and used it before to make soup, but never thought to just drink it by itself or use it to heal my gut until I started doing my research and found that it has amazing properties to heal the gut and can help get rid of candida overgrowth.
I had already eliminated much from my diet due to my Lyme Disease diagnosis years ago, but would splurge on occasion and eat other things. I still tried to keep it organic and natural, but it had gotten out of hand this last year with dating a new man and going out to eat a lot more than my body was used to. And now here I was with a messed digestive system and a yeast infection that just would not go away.
So for the last month or so I eliminated everything “bad” and basically did an elimination diet of sorts to remove any and all sugars, and anything else that could potentially aggravate the candida, but nothing really changed. I still had a yeast infection, going on two months at that point. I had also started taking probiotics more regularly again, and anti-fungals, as well as supplements meant for healing candida. Still a yeast infection existed. So after much research finding out that bone broth is the way to not only heal your gut and digestive system, it can also heal and get rid of candida.
For the month prior to starting a bone broth fast, I ate only meat, green veggies, sauerkraut, goats milk kefir, coconut kefir, coconut bread (homemade with no gluten or sugars), and nuts.
I had eliminated anything that was hard for the body to digest, that would be aggravating to the candida, and kept it very simple and basic. But still no change internally and that is why I decided to do a full bone broth fast to heal my insides.
Eating in this way, even though it didn't get rid of the candida, was still a great way for me start the bone broth fast.
Why is that?
It's because my body would not have such a shock from the fast because I had already eliminated harmful foods, hard foods for the body to digest, and anything else that would be difficult to keep away from while fasting. Such as bread, sugar, and cheese. Those three things people often crave and have a hard time getting away from and when they start a fast their body goes into shock, having intense cravings or causing the person to feel sick, because the body is detoxifying from those substances, and often they just can't stick with the fast for those reasons. But if you eliminate all those things first, eat clean and light for at least a week before taking on a fast, you will find it's easier for your body to adjust to the fast and finish detoxing, removing any other toxins it feels the need to remove while fasting. I ate that way for a month because I was hoping that diet in itself would get rid of the candida and when it did not I knew more drastic measures would need to be taken and started researching bone broth fasting. So I decided to do one after much research pointing to so many health benefits, which included helping with what I was dealing with.
You also want to incorporate fermented foods to your diet slowly prior to the fast for the same reason, as to not shock your system. If you are not used to eating fermented probiotic rich foods, it will take some time for your body to adjust to that being put into your system. That was the other thing I did when I started the elimination diet, was slowly adding in goats milk kefir and sauerkraut. Starting with just one tablespoon of one of them a day, then taking one of each per day, and now I have coconut yogurt that I have added in the mix as well. Eating a good amount of probiotic rich foods will help your body heal and keep your digestive system functioning properly.
Here is a great way to get started:
This is how I ate for a month prior to my bone broth fast.
Breakfast
Morning Smoothie
Made With:
Half a cucumber juiced
Half a zucchini juiced
One lemon or one lime juiced
One to two stalks of celery juiced
I then put the juices in a blender and added:
One whole avocado
One handful of kale
One tablespoon of goats milk kefir
I drank this while eating scrambled eggs made with spinach and green onions
Mid Morning I would have one cup of dandelion tea (It's very good for the digestive system and for detoxing.)
Lunch (any variation of these)
Steamed veggies and meat
broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, cabbage, brussels sprouts, or asparagus
organic ground beef, bison, or cubed chicken
Green salad with oil and vinegar
Blended veggie soups
Dinner (any variation)
meat and veggies same as above
blended soups made with only veggies
hearty soup made with meat and veggies and broth
Snacks
nuts (almonds, macadamia, pumpkin seeds, cashews)
nut butters made from the nuts listed above
coconut bread (gluten free and grain free with no sugar added)
a couple spoonfuls of sauerkraut
a cup of bone broth
This is literally how I ate for the month before fasting, and I know it sounds boring, but you can get through it, your body will thank you for it.
You must be disciplined and determined in order to take on and complete an elimination diet, and then also to do a fast of any kind and stick with it.
You will also want to reintroduce foods back into your diet gradually and gently, so you don't shock your system after the fast. Your stomach and digestive track are now clean once the fast is over and you don't want to overload it with heavy or harmful foods right away. Honestly you should never want to reintroduce the harmful foods at all. Like fast food and processed food, or really sugary foods. Those should stay out the diet indefinitely in order to stay healthy and keep your digestive system strong.
I will do another post about the reintroduction of foods later on when I get to that point in my journey. For now this is how it all started, it at least gives you the basics on how to start if you wish to heal your gut and feel better inside and out.
Blessings to you all.
