Top 5 Herbs for Winter Health

It's the end of Nov. with Dec. starting tomorrow. Winter is coming and for some of us in the northern hemisphere it has pretty much begun. With winter weather comes winter health concerns. Whether it be keeping warm, preventing or shortening a cold, or keeping the flu at bay, there are many natural things we can do to help combat these concerns through the winter months.

For me immune boosting and warming herbs are in order. Some have both properties in one which makes it a double bang for your buck, so to speak. So here are my top 5 herbs for winter health:

#1 Ginger

Ginger is a warming and healing herb. Great for it's aid with stomach issues, motion sickness, morning sickness, and digestive problems, it is also great to warm you on those cold nights. Not only is it warming, but it also has anti-inflammatory properties that aid with arthritis for those of you who may have stiff painful joints that get worse in the cold damp weather. I like to grate some fresh ginger root and brew it in boiling water with cinnamon and vanilla.

#2 Cinnamon

Speaking of cinnamon, it is also a warming herb. It too is good for digestion and also makes a great pain reliever and infection fighter for its bacteria killing properties. Adding cinnamon to your tea, or just some hot water with honey will make for a great warming cold day drink.

#3 Garlic

Garlic is natures antibiotic. It has so many uses for healing it should be considered the medicine of nature, in my opinion anyway. It kills bacteria and fungus, and is also antiviral. This is a great natural remedy for colds and flu. It is also warming. This stuff packs a punch and I am not just talking about the taste, it is full of health providing properties and ailment fighters that this is the main thing everyone should be consuming regularly to maintain optimum health.

#4 Peppermint

Peppermint is another one that is great for digestion, but is also known for its aid with colds and flu for its analgesic properties in opening up the airways and easing coughs. Peppermint tea with lemon and honey is a great thing to sip on daily during the winter months. Lemon and honey not only add a great flavor, but they add their own healing properties to the peppermint which make it a must to keep on keeping on.

#5 St. John's Wort

Most commonly used for relieving depression St. John's Wort is a great addition to your winter herbs to help prevent Seasonal Affective Disorder also known as SAD (for those who get depressed because of the cold dark days and the lack of sun,) and it's antiviral properties as well. It will help you feel good emotionally and keep viruses at bay, what better thing to keep on hand than that?

So those are my top 5 best herbs for winter health.

What do you think of them all?

Were there any that surprised you?

Do you have any you would like to add?

Please comment and share.

Thanks for reading.

Blessings
